AFP honors scholars Partners in Education

Stakeholders Recognition

CEBU CITY – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) recognized the outstanding students and partner stakeholders who continue to support the education of military dependents in a ceremony  held at Harold’s Hotel Cebu, Saturday (April 25).

Among the honorees during “Salute to Success 2015” are 14 students, five of whom graduated as cum laude from various colleges and universities in Visayas. All students were recipients of educational benefits from the AFP Educational Benefit System (AFPEBS).

The AFPEBS is a morale and welfare organization of the AFP which has been providing educational assistance to qualified dependents of military personnel. It caters particularly to the disadvantaged orphans whose parents perished or were incapacitated in combat. It currently has 4,309 grantees under 279 programs supported by law and partnerships with educational, government, socio-civic, and financial institutions.

At present, the system is being managed by Lt. Col. Genaro C. Menor PAF (GSC) who is also the current Chief/General Manager of the AFPEBSO.

Anchored with the theme “Education for Peace, Progress, and Prosperity”, the recognition ceremony seeks to reward students through the Student Achievement Recognition System (StARS). The program is aimed at recognizing outstanding grantees in their respective fields of expertise in both academic and non-academic activities.

This year, the AFP honored 17 schools in the Visayas Region that actively supported the organization in helping the soldiers’ dependents achieve a better future through educational grants. These schools currently have scholars under Memorandum of Agreement partnerships; Philippine Association of State Colleges and Universities (PASUC) scholarship; and Presidential Decree 577.

The AFP Deputy Chief of Staff and chairman of the AFPEBS Board of Trustees, Lt Gen Virgilio O Domingo attended as the guest of honor and speaker. Other guests include the AFP Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Rear Admiral Antonio Habulan Jr., the Commander of Naval Forces Central, COMMO BAYANI R GAERLAN AFP and members of the AFPEBS Board of Trustees.

The recognition ceremony is an annually-held activity to acknowledge the key contributions of individuals and partners to the academic success of its beneficiaries, which is in line with the AFPEBSO's commitment of “Leaving No Soldier's Orphan Behind”.
